  8. about...  Lately  I  launched  another
  9. website  from  the  amigawebring which
  10. was  listed  as  a  totaly new one and
  11. after  the  Internet  Explorer  on  my
  12. PeeCee  at work had built up the page,
  13. there was the title that made me doubt
  14. about it beneath a  big  and  colorful
  15. domain logo, that said:«»

  19. «c2»`What?` was my first thought.  And  my
  20. only  reaction  was  to  stare  at the
  21. screen  by  asking  me  what I have to
  22. read there.
  23. What does it mean when a site that has
  24. been launched the  first  time  a  few
  25. days ago is already a cult site? Is my
  26. brain  doing its job not as good as it
  27. should?  Or  was there something wrong
  28. with reality?«»

  30. And I had to recognise that  this  one
  31. was  not  the  only  site online which
  32. claimed to be cult although it  wasn`t
  33. yet.  There  are also some others with
  34. doubtful  advertisment  about its cult
  35. state. And it is not only connected to
  36. websites. There are also some programs
  37. around which are known of  course  but
  38. still do not deserve to be called cult
  39. programs.  But  why became this way to
  40. behave  so  popular?  Is it not longer
  41. possible to be not on the  top?  Do we
  42. always have to be the best? Do we have
  43. to  fake what we make and what we are?
  44. Is this the last instance before self-
  45. denial of all amigians???
  46. Of  course  this  assumed  cult is not
  47. only  concentrated  on amiga - it even
  48. has  not  started on it - but likewise
  49. and that was what made me sad.I though
  50. "we" were no fakers at all.Not in this
  51. way. But I had to realize that a wrong
  52. and bad way to  get  a  product  known
  53. swapped from the world industry to the
  54. computer  system  I  love  and  always
  55. respected  for  its  independence  and
  56. honesty.Sad to notice that we are like
  57. the others. Nothing special anymore...«»

  63. that is not cult,I have to write about
  64. what  cult  actually  is. Also I don`t
  65. want to loose myself and take  you  in
  66. another  depressive  article about the
  67. bad things connected to  our  computer
  68. platform.   I  want  to  analyse   the
  69. problem, reveal the reasons for it and
  70. hopefully solve it at the end.«»

  72. When starts something to be cult?  Can
  73. everything be cult? And aren`t there a
  74. lot of things those were cult from the
  75. first  second  on?    How  to  decided
  76. between "real" cult  and  things  only
  77. praised  as  cult? These are questions
  78. that directly pop up in my mind. And I
  79. am   not  only  willing  to  find  the
  80. answers  for  them  but  also  want to
  81. investigate why  the  things  I  wrote

  88. guess you will agree with me that cult
  89. is always something new. Or  at  least
  90. something  that wasn`t there before in
  91. this  special  way.  In a lot of cases
  92. was today`s cult a yesterday`s shock.
  93. When people where for  example  afraid
  94. about splatter movies because of their
  95. brutality  and  unhampared way to show
  96. the  sexual  act,  they became cult in
  97. the underground scene  very  fast.  Or
  98. even trash movies which were only sh*t
  99. (and mostly still are)  developed to a
  100. special kind of art. These movies were
  101. so  totaly  out of order that they had
  102. to be recognised out of order. But how
  103. to judge something which wasn`t  there
  104. before?  Something  you don`t know? Is
  105. it still pure crap or even art?«»

  107. Cult  sets  always  new standards. Not
  108. higher  but  always  never-seen-before
  109. standards.  A cult object could be the
  110. only one of its kind,  but it could be
  111. the first one too.  "Baby" for example
  112. was  the first of its kind and even if
  113. computers are standard and much faster
  114. these days,  this big and slow machine
  115. remains cult.  The c64 is already cult
  116. too  and  even   the   amiga   itself,
  117. although still doubtful nowadays.«»
  118. Anyhow  cult  comes "normally" (if you
  119. can  use  this  word  by writing about
  120. cult)  from  the  underground  scenes.
  121. Mostly  made  by unknown  persons.  At
  122. least unknown for the puplic.  Cult is
  123. also no mainstream. Never!
  124. Cult  has  to be so impressive that it
  125. has to become cult anyway!  An example
  126. therefor  is  "Odyssey"  by  Alcatraz.
  127. Before the Alcatraz guys released this
  128. movie of a demo, no one  used  a  demo
  129. this way.
  130. Cult  inspires!  Not  to  copy, but to
  131. develope own and maybe  better  ideas.
  132. Even  if  this  never  happened in the
  133. case of Odyssey - we  saw  a  lot  try
  134. but  fail - it  often  does.   And  it
  135. should, thereby gets cult a function.«»

  138. «c4» What Is Cult Not?«»

  140. «c2»Cult  doesn`t mean that it is good but
  141. good stuff doesn`t have  to  be  cult.
  142. Cult  has  to  survive. Anyway. A long
  143. time. Nothing is cult that is in today
  144. but already out tomorrow.  And that is
  145. the problem of a lot of  things  which
  146. are declared to be cult today.  As the
  147. best  example  for such assumed cult I
  148. chose boygroups. Started with the "New
  149. Kids  On  The Block" - who are cult by
  150. the way,  because  they  found  a  new
  151. direction  of  music and performance -
  152. there  are  so  many  of  them  on the
  153. stages today, that  they  can  not  be
  154. cult   anymore.   Cult  is,  when  the
  155. natural   demand   on   something   is
  156. effective  higher  than  the  possible
  157. supply AND advertising that is  needed
  158. to cause this demand.  Cult can not be
  159. repeated,  but boygroups are repeating
  160. on and on.   Always to be continued by
  161. others. They are only pushed. Simply?!
  162. Faked  cult  objects  used  by  people
  163. dependent to media and advertising.«»
  164. Cult could also be something you never
  165. see or at least you are  waiting for a
  166. long time.
  167. So  for  example  Mr. Wilson  from the
  168. american tv-series  "Home Improvement"
  169. who has never shown his face until the
  170. last episode.
  171. And  DISC  also  got a higher state of
  172. cult just due its two delays  than  it
  173. had before.  It maybe never could beat
  174. RAW in the past but if you are able to
  175. read  this article and if you know how
  176. many people have waited how  long  for
  177. the  eleventh  issue  to come true you
  178. will  know  why  it  will surely get a
  179. higher  state of cult as RAW got or at
  180. least  why it has the chance to get it

  183. But  who  makes  cult? Today the "new"
  184. cult is mostly pushed or even faked by
  185. media and advertising agencies. People
  186. are watching tv and get told what they
  187. have to buy, to say and to believe.
  188. And  it  seems  nothing is easier than
  189. this.   It  started  with  the  Barbie
  190. puppets and had  to  be  seen  on  the
  191. Tamagotchi and Pokemon hype.  It seems
  192. people  need someone to tell them what
  193. they need, but this is already another
  194. topic, I know.«»

  199. «c2»It is not always that easy to decided.
  200. There is a grey  zone  everywhere,  as
  201. always.  For  example  you  will agree
  202. when I say that cult can not be a copy
  203. of  something.  But let us have a look
  204. at the "Rocky  Horror  Picture  Show",
  205. which is without a question cult,  but
  206. which is without a question  a mixture
  207. of copies too! BUT IT IS cult.
  208. More  doubtful is  therefore the movie
  209. "From  dusk  `till  dawn"  by  Quentin
  210. Tarantino.   This   piece   of   funny
  211. entertainment is of  course  something
  212. special  and  it is a great mixture of
  213. the  best  movies  of  its genre - the
  214. modern  Rocky  Horror Show so to say -
  215. but it also got pushed a lot as  every
  216. new  movie  gets  these  days.  I must
  217. confess  I  liked  to  watch  it and I
  218. think  it  had  the  possibilities  to
  219. become cult if it where not as  pushed
  220. as it was at the end.«»

  226. about is the  difference  between  and
  227. the similarity of cult and culture? Is
  228. it  only  a  word  family or something
  229. more?  But  the deadline is near and I
  230. am going to  get  out  of  breath  and
  231. words  at  this  point.   Write   some
  232. feedback  and  maybe  I will publish a
  233. sequel article and both of  them  will
  234. become cult some time...«»

  236. At  last  I  know  this  topic  is too
  237. complicate and wide as  that  I  could
  238. neither  explain all my thoughts about
  239. it   in  one  article  nor  find   the
  240. ultimate  solution.   Maybe   I should
  241. write  a  book  about  it some time if
  242. there  is  still  none written yet. At
  243. least I hope to make you  think  about
  244. it and to ask yourself a question: Did
  245. we already start to deny ourselves?«»
